Spring Into Change: Unfolding New Beginnings 🌷
If we give in to anxiety or impatience, digging up the seeds like children, checking in to see how much they’ve grown, we would never actually give them the space and time to take root.
After a number of rather literal dark and dreary days, the sun is shining and the earth is beginning to blossom. It's a reminder of a fundamental truth often resisted: everything changes, always. This season, as we witness the world around us spring into life, it's a vivid, beautiful showcase of change's potential. Yet, this transformation doesn't happen overnight. The silent, unseen work of the preceding months lays the groundwork for the bright burst of life we celebrate in spring. This is a powerful metaphor for our own lives and endeavors.
In recent months, I've navigated through an intense landscape of change. And yet, each challenge has underscored the undeniable truth of transformation's constant presence in our lives. It has continued to remind me, fiercely and lovingly, the importance of embracing change, not as an adversary but as an inevitable partner in growth.
Resistance vs. Embrace
It's normal, human really, to resist, or planning meticulously in the face of change, trying to control what we can and clinging to the comfort of the known. But resistance only postpones the inevitable, often amplifying the discomfort we were trying to avoid.
Spring shows us the beauty of release and the embrace of the new. Just as the earth doesn't rush its awakening, we too must learn the art of patient unfolding. The months of quiet, of seemingly nothing happening, are as crucial as the moment of bloom. They are the foundation of all that is to come.
The Complexity of Change
Our brains are quite literally prediction machines - it's there predisposition to predict. ALWAYS. What's more, our brains seek to be right. Thus their predictions, based on past experiences, play a huge role in how we navigate the future.
While these predictions intend to guide us, they can inadvertently narrow our horizons, as we are bound by our limited experience.
Cultivation and Trust
The journey of change requires us to be cultivators—patient, trusting, vigilant. We plant seeds not knowing exactly how or when they will sprout.
This process isn't just about nurturing the projects and transformations we initiate; it's about nurturing our resilience, our faith in the unseen process of becoming.
An Invitation to Trust the Process
Today, I invite you to reflect on your relationship with change. Where might you be resisting? Where might impatience be clouding your vision? Embrace the changes unfolding in your life, nurture them with intention and care, and most importantly, trust in their eventual blossoming. Even when it's uncomfortable, even when the end result is unclear, there's a profound strength in surrendering to the process.
Change, in its essence, is not just about the new life that springs forth. It's about our growth, our evolution as we navigate the journey. Like the gardener who trusts in the seeds they've sown, we too must believe in the potential of what we're cultivating, even when it's yet to be seen.
In embracing change, nurturing our endeavors, and trusting in the process, we open ourselves to the vast possibilities of what can emerge. And just like spring, what arises might just surpass our wildest dreams.
Let's embrace this journey together, trusting in the beautiful unfoldment of our shared human experience.
Warmly,
Rachel Tenenbaum

Unlock Your Inner Strength: Conquer Inner Critics 🔓💪
With a staggering 70% of women and 50% of men experiencing imposter syndrome—and even more grappling with their inner critics—it's clear this is a universal challenge.
I recently dove into the world of imposter syndrome and our inner critics, revealing how they can dominate our thoughts and, by extension, shape our lives. With a staggering 70% of women and 50% of men experiencing imposter syndrome—and even more grappling with their inner critics—it's clear this is a universal challenge.
But here's the game-changer: a simple yet profound tool that turns the tide on both fronts. Remember how we talked about pausing when these voices emerge? It's because battling or ignoring them only amplifies their influence, muddying our mental clarity and pushing us into reactive states—be it withdrawal or confrontation. This division, both within us and with others, stems from the fear that the world echoes our inner critics.
Pause, Acknowledge, Transform
Pausing to acknowledge these thoughts does more than silence them; it empowers us. Why do they exist? To keep us safe. But left unchecked, they're like inexperienced tween drivers at the wheel – convinced they know how to drive, but hand them the wheel and you're sure to find yourself in a pileup on the nearest interstate.😂
Here's where we can pivot: Recognize these thoughts for what they are, label them, and then actively engage with them through a transformative system I call Town Hall(SM). This isn't just about quieting the noise; it's about converting that cacophony into insights and wisdom that resonate with our deepest values.
Town Hall(SM): Your Mental Alchemy
This isn't theoretical jargon but a practical, values-aligned system grounded in brain science. It's about seeing through the fog, purifying our mental environment, and aligning actions with our core values rather than being puppeteered by fear.
Having facilitated this workshop for female executives and business owners, I've witnessed its power to illuminate and liberate. And now, I'm thrilled to extend this opportunity to you.
Join Us for a Transformative Journey
My desire is to share more of this with you through a workshop that promises to shift these concepts from theory to actionable practice. While it's a busy couple of months ahead, if the prospect of transforming your inner dialogue excites you, let's make it happen together.🤝
Are You In?
If your heart says, "Yes, I'm ready for change," simply reply with “ME!” or “Interested.” Your response will help gauge interest and possibly schedule another empowering event.
Here's to turning our inner critics into our greatest allies,
P.S. Just pausing to recognize these voices is already a massive step forward. But if you're craving more—if you're a seeker ready to harness the full power of your mind—this workshop is for you!
P.P.S. I am excited to continue digging further as well in THIS Sunday's Calm & Connect!

How to Silence the Relentless Cacophony of Voices 📣
Consider that for a moment: Freedom is “without anxiety about imperfection.”
Have you ever noticed a cacophony of voices inside your head? Criticizing, doubting, and often holding you back from your true potential?
If your answer is yes, you're not alone. And while these internal dialogues can feel relentless, they also hold a key to profound self-discovery and freedom.
Inspired by the wisdom of 7th Century Zen master Seng-tsan, and shared by Tara Brach, I've been contemplating the idea that freedom is being "without anxiety about imperfection."
Consider that for a moment: Freedom is “without anxiety about imperfection.”
The voices that run rampant usually stake their energy on their perception of your imperfection, driven by a sometimes quiet-- other times megaphone📣-in-your-ear- fear of inadequacy or unworthiness.
Freedom from that anxiety of imperfection is not about silencing our inner critics, but rather learning to coexist with, and even at times leveraging them in a way that diminishes their control over us.
Designing a new Dynamic 🖊
Imagine for a moment the possibility of a new relationship with these voices where you listen to them with understanding and gentle curiosity rather than resistance.
To be honest, for me at times, it has felt like I am drowning in their outpour.
For some - or rather many - of us, the tendency can be to numb, distract and disconnect; anything to guard against hearing the soft hum of these incessant voices. But when we can learn to lean in, to listen in a radical way, with compassion for ourselves and curiosity, we weaken their power and begin to find a form of liberation.
In recent weeks I have been playing with a concept that has been transformative. It's built on everything I've used and taught to date. For the sake of your eyes👀, and time 🕗, I am going to start with the foundations this strategy relies upon, and then I will share more about this process both in Sunday's Calm and Connect AND our next newsletter.
So let's start with the foundations, because without this, you cannot leverage the rest of the strategy.
Foundation I 🌱
Pausing. While pausing may seem overly simplistic, when we try to ignore, fight or even “shut out,” the voices, they instead turn the faucets on full force, leaking constant contamination into the water of our mind.
The result? In addition to a low hum of suffocation, we cannot see or perceive clearly. We become more reactive, tense and resistant to external stimuli (people, comments, interactions) because everything reinforces their narrative.
Pausing and simply acknowledging their presence is essential if we want to shut off the valve and start to decontaminate the water.
It also enables us to take a step back and see the voices for what they are: thoughts driven by fear, wanting us to be happy, but wildly off base in how to make that happen, manufacturing misery in the process.
As we approach our next Calm and Connect event, I highly encourage you to reflect on your own inner dialogue. How do these voices shape your reality?
How might your life change if you viewed them through a lens of compassion and curiosity?
And then start with those pauses.
I am excited to dig in further to Part II of this conversation with you, both later this month - and through rich conversation at our next Calm & Connect!

Empowerment through Choice: From Fear to Courage with Ancient Wisdom👵
Our choices, often made in fleeting moments, shape our reality. They dictate whether we cultivate a world dominated by fear and division or one flourishing with compassion and unity.
Everyday we stand at a crossroads; faced with decisions and choices that shape our lives.
And while it is said that it's the big moments that define us, I argue that it is in the micro-moments, the ones that seen insignificant, where our character and resilience are cultivated. These micro-moments can strengthen our core OR, if we are not mindful, send us spiraling down a vortex of destructive thoughts and actions, knocking us off kilter, distancing us from what we desire most.
This parable brilliantly cuts straight to the heart of truth, reflecting the power of choice in those micro-moments:
The Essence of Our Daily Choices
Every day, multiple times a day, we stand before these wolves, and the choices we make, particularly in fleeting moments, shape our reality. They determine whether we live a world dominated by fear and division or one flourishing with compassion and unity.
It's in what we choose to say, and what we withhold, how we to engage, the actions we take and the thoughts we entertain.
And whether those thoughts are directed at ourselves or others, it makes no difference because feeding the wolf of shame, malice, righteousness: it eats at our core, and destabilizes our peace and influences our actions towards ourselves and others.
In leadership, as in life, it can be tempting to take the path of least resistance, succumbing to ego and anger And it's understandable; beyond whats largely modeled, there's a dopamine kick associated with it, making it both addictive and fleetingly rewarding. But as enticing as it may be, this path is treacherous in the long run.
A Personal Reflection: The Journey Toward Compassion
Acknowledging the presence of these wolves has been transformational for me. Feeding the wolf swayed by ego had become habit, shaped by influential figures and authorities who promoted a dog-eat-dog kind of world and/or were accustomed to putting others down ( self included) in order to feed the need for power.
While these influences can infiltrate our own mannerisms, how we think and behave towards others and ourselves, the road to unlearning - to feeding the wolf of curiosity, fortitude, resilience and peace - is life changing. It requires constant (compassionate) vigilance and an unwavering commitment to growth and wellbeing.
But what I can assure you is this - when you consciously choose which wolf to feed, your world transforms. Each of us will experience this change differently.
A Challenge for You: Which Wolf Will You Feed?
As we forge ahead, I extend to you a challenge: In every decision, every interaction, consider deeply which wolf you are feeding. This is not about an aggressive vigilance, but rather a compassionate awareness, knowing that without awareness we cannot be at choice. But with awareness we can choose… and while we may choose the more perilous path from time to time, we opt to reflect on the chain reactions and results and choose differently the next time we find ourselves at similar crossroads.
This is not merely a choice but a profound responsibility. Our thoughts, words, and actions hold the potential to transform not just our lives but the world at large.
Let us be active architects rather than passive dreamers of a brighter future. Each choice we make lays a brick in the foundation of the world we wish to inhabit, a world where leadership is synonymous with empathy, integrity, growth and genuine connection.

The Alchemy of Self: Transforming How We See Ourselves, and Therefore, the World ✨
"Our states of mind and our states of being dictate our thoughts, which drive our actions, and ultimately sculpt the reality we experience."
"We do not see the world as it is, we see the world as we are." - Anais Nin
In the quiet moments of reflection, have you ever pondered over the nature of your reality? Is it a rigid, unchangeable constant, or is it something more malleable, something that shifts with the tides of our perceptions?
For me, this profound insight by Anais Nin captures the essence of our journey. It's not just about changing the scenery around us but transforming the lens through which we view life.
From Personal Experience: At some point, we all yearn for change—be it in a fleeting moment or during life's persistent trials. I have lived through thousands of such moments, both as a child and well into my adulthood, where the only voice I heard was the echo of a desire for something – or everything – to be different, myself included.
I lived in fear. Fear that I wasn’t good enough, fear that things would change – fearful that things wouldn’t change. Fear permeated my being all the way down to my bones, but it was such a constant companion, I hardly realized its influence and couldn’t imagine life otherwise.
Until it hit me, like a lightning bolt, painful, illuminating and freeing all at once, liberating me into a whole new lease on life.
The quest for happiness, contentment, or success was not about altering my essence but about embracing a new state of mind.
Iterating Out: Decades later, I have watched innumerable clients who arrive at my doorstep with the desire to change their worlds (their jobs, partners, teams, colleagues), shift their relationship with themselves, how they see and treat themselves, and ultimately, generate tectonic shifts in their worlds.
The ever-agitated CEO moved from a world against him to a world which flocked to him.
The fear-riddled entrepreneur moved from a world to be fearful of – to a world which is replete with incredible opportunities.
The inadequate manager riddled with imposter syndrome, watched as her ideas + processes became a global company’s “standard” for processes.
To alter our outcomes, we must work with our minds; how we see ourselves. There is no other way around it.
The Shift: How do we initiate such a transformative shift?
It starts with self-compassion, recognizing and embracing ourselves wholly and completely. To commit, above all else, to treat ourselves with the kindness we would bestow upon others – those we hold most dear.
It takes courage: Courage to be willing to do things differently. Courage to be willing to look at – and then unravel the unconscious stories and beliefs we have nourished and fed over the years; for they have become the dirty filters through which we experience life.
It takes patience and time. The journey of self-transformation and cultivating a loving perspective towards ourselves is not a destination but a continuous path of growth. It’s about carving a new road, not patching a pothole. It’s about sustainability and it’s about living life rather than running away from- or resisting – life.
Closing Thoughts: A journey I’ve dedicated myself to for over 15 years, it’s an onion, continuing to reveal layers of potential, opportunity and boundless love. But in staying committed I know, and have seen too many times to count, that by choosing to really LOVE ourselves, we can indeed change the way we look at things - and in changing our perspectives, we dramatically reshape the world.
And as a peaceful word MUST start within, so too must a joyful, loving world. It MUST begin within.

Season of Reflection, Joy & Growth 🍁
While this season is about giving to others, it's equally important to gift yourself. No, I'm not talking about that trendy gadget or designer wear. I'm hinting at something far more precious: a deep connection with + truly meeting yourself and your potential, beyond barriers and unconscious limits and way past what you imagine possible
As December unfolds, the world around us glitters with twinkling lights, echoing laughter, and shared moments of joy. And while the festive spirit is palpable, there's another energy that December carries — one of reflection, transition, and growth.
Earlier this year, we delved deep into understanding the nuances of Imposter Syndrome, discerning judgment from discernment, rumination, and the peaks and valleys of stress. As we round the corner into December, I want to invite you to use the insights from our past exchanges as tools for navigating this special season.
✨A Mindful Pause✨
Remember our chat on rumination? From packed schedules filed with festivities travel plans and year-end deadlines, it's easy to get trapped in a whirlwind of thoughts and what feels like must-do lists. Whenever you catch yourself spiraling or getting caught-up in the mental mayhem, take a mindful pause. Feel the ground beneath your feet, tune into your breath, and reconnect with the present moment.
❄️Judgment vs. Discernment❄️
During this season, as families gather, old patterns can be quick to resurface, sometimes leading to judgments. It's an opportune time to revisit our October exchange: discernment simply views facts without emotional baggage, while judgment divides. Before making a quick judgment, pause, and practice discernment. This will not only enhance your personal well-being but also foster deeper connections with loved ones.
🎁Gift Yourself the Gift of Growth🎁
While this season is about giving to others, it's equally important to gift yourself. No, I'm not talking about that trendy gadget or designer wear. I'm hinting at something far more precious: a deep connection with + truly meeting yourself and your potential, beyond barriers and unconscious limits and way past what you imagine possible
As we close this chapter and prepare for a new year, imagine the power of gifting yourself a spot in the Radical Mindful Leadership Accelerator. It's more than just a program. It's a journey of deep connection, of self-discovery, empowerment, and lasting transformation alongside other amazing leaders.
It's about ensuring that your 2024 aligns more authentically with who you truly are and the you, you are ready to step into.
🌟Laying the Foundation for the Grand Finale🌟
In the spirit of building on our past newsletters, next month we'll be wrapping up the year with a grand finale – focusing on setting intentions and dreams for 2024. But before we jump ahead, savor December. Let's be present in each moment, cherish every connection, and anticipate the magic that lies ahead.
To a mindful, joyous, and December!
Gratitude + Tools To Navigate Stress
Every moment is an opportunity to choose differently. To rewrite narratives, and to rewire the way we respond to our triggers, to our anger and to our fears.
Let's have a real talk. As November further unfurls, you'll be swimming in messages that spotlight gratitude. And while that's beautifully important, I’d like to dive into something that’s equally needed in the midst of storms, challenges and complex conversations.
You know the ones that can send you reeling?
A memory surfaces: a while back, on a day that began like any other, I faced a setback – and really a verbal and personal attack that left me staggering. Shocked, really… And in that moment, against all data and practicality, self-doubt surged… it was so palpable. The attack was reflective of something said to me in my youth, that, for a time, had defined me - how I viewed myself and the world. I was young and I didn’t know better. So these words, meant to drive a dagger where it would be most felt, resurfaced that wound.
Fear and anger boiled, and I could feel its potential to take over. Its potential to guide my thoughts, my actions, and my state of mind. But in that same instant, I also saw something different, a glimmer.
That glimmer beckoned me to breathe, to not respond, and to pause. To have compassion.
I was able to unhook my brain from stress and fear (harnessing the advice and direction I so often give others), and that piercing moment quickly transformed into a series of stunning realizations.
Not only was there tremendous learning which seeped into my bones, but the biggest gift? The opportunity to re-write a decades-old narrative, and to choose how I wanted to integrate and embed that moment and its meaning.
The reminder? Every moment is an opportunity to choose differently. To rewrite narratives, and to rewire the way we respond to our triggers, to our anger and to our fears.
Because when we act from a place driven by the above, the results? Ineffective at best, and but more often than not, destructive to ourselves and beyond.
🌊 The 3 C’s: A Compass for Navigating Rough Seas 🌊
Compassion: There is a wild misunderstanding that compassion is complacency. Rather, true compassion is fierce, and it facilitates our second C, Clarity. Embrace yourself with the same warmth and understanding you'd offer a dear friend. Extend that gentle compassion to others too – In doing so, you'll find setbacks morphing into bridges of connection and healing.
Clarity: Amid life's whirlwinds, PAUSE. With that fierce compassion, take a courageous moment to truly see, to discern the path ahead. By doing this, you not only navigate your immediate surroundings but also the broader canvas of life, ensuring you and those around you thrive.
Conscious Action: Actions speak louder than words, but conscious actions echo into eternity. Empowered by compassion and guided by clarity, make choices that are thoughtful and deliberate, considering both personal well-being and the collective good.
💌 Redefining Gratitude & A Special Invitation 💌
While gratitude is the buzzword of November, let's redefine it. Don't just be thankful for the peaks; find strength and gratitude in the valleys. Those challenges? They’re not stumbling blocks; they’re stepping stones to our brightest self.
Stress In advance Of Holidays
When stress becomes king, life can feel like a foggy maze. Your vision and hearing literally narrows, Decisions are harder, the joy in little moments fades, and our empathy—the very thing that connects us—gets lost in the shuffle.
As the leaves fall and the air chills, there is the palpable festive joyful buzz.
And, there is also a sneaky little monster that begins to peek around the corner: stress.
So before it’s in full force, I want to get real and address how to make it work for you, not against you. Because we’ve all felt that chokehold.
That 3 am stare-down with the ceiling, or in my case, that trip to the hospital over a decade ago. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s oh-so-human. But when stress goes from challenging to soul-crushing? That's where burnout dims our brightest moments.
✅ The Goldilocks Curve of Stress – Your GPS to Thriving
Imagine Amy Arnsten’s bell curve which correlates stress with productivity and wellbeing. At its peak, stress gives you wings, it’s like you are flying, fueling passion and productivity. But then when you start to stray towards too little, or today’s topic, too much stress, you can quickly find yourself at the epicenter of chaos.
And the impact?
It’s messy.
When stress becomes king, life can feel like a foggy maze. Your vision and hearing literally narrows, Decisions are harder, the joy in little moments fades, and our empathy—the very thing that connects us—gets lost in the shuffle.
😬 Personalize Your Stress Strategy
But first it requires acknowledging that sticking your head in the sand and ignoring the signs is a recipe for disaster. Knowing where you stand on the stress spectrum at any moment is what keeps you from losing your marbles.
Further, each of us carries our own set of worries, burdens, triggers and challenges. Reflecting on what activates you, is a critical key – or better stated, lifeline - to strategizing and navigating this season. Because balance isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s a must – or bust.”

The Antidote To Anxiety’s Merry Go Round
"What distinguishes rumination from helpful processing is that it doesn't provide new ways of thinking, behaving, or solving the problem. It just covers the same territory again and again, keeping us locked in the negative mindset."
Have you ever had a date with anxiety? I mean, who hasn't, right? Maybe you're nodding your head thinking, "Yesterday? Today? Now???😂"
If you've never dealt with anxiety, feel free to move to the next post, however if you have, let's talk about the merry-go-round of anxiety, specifically, good ol' #rumination.
You know, those times when you're trapped in a hamster wheel of thoughts, spinning without really getting anywhere? Your brain says that this exercise is necessary - requisite - and that it's a really fabulous use of your brain capital - and yet it gets you nowhere.
Morra Aarons-Mele nails it in her recently published Harvard Business Review article How High Achievers Overcome Their Anxiety:
"What distinguishes rumination from helpful processing is that it doesn't provide new ways of thinking, behaving, or solving the problem. It just covers the same territory again and again, keeping us locked in the negative mindset."
Imagine being stuck in a loop of worries, labyrinths of rumination, wandering over the same pathways again and again, without liberation and a clear path out, never mind forward. It's exhausting. Familiar?
While it's cozy at times to snuggle with those worries and play out future scenarios, ultimately it renders us frozen and disempowered to take meaningful steps in our personal and professional lives.
However, There IS a light at the end of the rumination labyrinth.
.....Superhero of the Hour? 😍 YES. Mindfulness.
Amid the labyrinth of life, Mindfulness shines a light on the rumination maze. Rather than being stuck inside, Mindfulness helps you step outside the maze so that you can adequately assess, read it like a map, and then properly plot the right steps to move forward.
What's more, as we navigate the complex landscapes of our lives, Mindfulness enables us to become aware of when we get caught in the rumination cycle and UNHOOK from its clutches.
With every mindful pivot, we transform ourselves from rumination captives to solution-savvy warriors. We're talking about breaking free, taking action, and watching our growth skyrocket.
Share your thoughts: Has rumination ever hindered your ability to take vital steps in your personal or professional journey? I'd love to hear your insights and experiences.

The Critical Distinction Between Judgement and Discernment - And Why It’s Essential For Your Leadership
Discernment simply looks at the facts: what works, what won't, and can be a bridge to curiosity to look at how to navigate complex situations. It lacks the emotional baggage judgment carries. Judgment, on the other hand, creates divides, within ourselves and others. It’s black and white, leaves no room for curiosity, and can stir self-righteousness, can make us (kinda) feel better about ourselves.
Did you know that the difference between Judgement and Discernment is HUGE, critical - AND it’s life and leadership transforming?? 👇
Discernment simply looks at the facts: what works, what won't, and can be a bridge to curiosity to look at how to navigate complex situations. It lacks the emotional baggage judgment carries.
Judgment, on the other hand, creates divides, within ourselves and others. It’s black and white, leaves no room for curiosity, and can stir self-righteousness, can make us (kinda) feel better about ourselves.. Or even really feel better about ourselves.
For example: discernment says “maybe my boss is overstressed, and scared herself and has not learned how to manage it well” Judgment on the other hand says “My boss has the emotional intelligence of a second grade squirrel.”
But again, it creates divides…
… and then when we direct it at ourselves, Ooph! That is a whole other talk and conversation - but it is worse than our worst critic.
… And judgment makes it really difficult to relate, communicate, collaborate, resolve issues, never mind innovate - and come up with out-of-the box solutions when it's most needed.
BUT as you start to leverage discernment, it begins to rewire habitual reactions - shifts your state of mind - which shifts your actions, interactions and ultimately the results that you get.
Where could you leverage a bit of discernment? It’s your game-changer.
If you are ready to embrace this game-changer, and not just understand but truly embody this difference, and want to connect for 1:1 coaching or corporate workshops, keynotes and trainings, reach out, let’s connect.

Unleash Your Inner Power: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome and Negative Thoughts
Have you ever found yourself trapped in the clutches of imposter syndrome? Or been at the mercy of relentless negative thoughts that seem to pop up at the most inopportune times? These challenges are more common than you might think, and the ability to conquer them is a skill that can revolutionize both your leadership prowess and your entire life.
Allow me to share a profound truth encapsulated in this timeless quote:
"Your worst enemy cannot harm you as much as your own thoughts, unguarded. But once mastered, no one can help you as much." - The Dhammapada
The insidious trap we often fall into is taking every thought that crosses our mind as the absolute truth. Whether it's a self-critical whisper or a paralyzing fear, these thoughts are not indisputable facts. Instead, they are narratives we construct, narratives that we have the extraordinary power to reshape at any given moment.
Imagine embarking on a daring career move, pursuing a lofty dream, or stepping boldly beyond your comfort zone, all while being guided by these disempowering voices and narratives. It's a recipe for self-sabotage.
Here's a piece of advice: You deserve better. You deserve to lead from a place of strength, clarity, and self-assuredness.
But it requires Mindfulness. It requires Awareness… AND the intentional action and response to these thoughts.
Case in point: only a few weeks ago, I dove in with an executive, who in digging into what was holding him back from taking certain actions was a niggly voice saying “Really, do you think you really can??” Simply becoming aware, and then crafting a plan forward, with how to respond, how to take intentional action, was transformative.
This executive is not alone. It is a common story for all of us, and one I see day in and day out.
So together let’s address it.

Labor Day Reflections
In the chaos of life, the most transformative journey often lies within. Pausing, unplugging, and reflecting grants us a powerful chance to embrace clarity, enrich relationships, and infuse life with vibrant meaning.
🍃 Unhook to Reconnect: The Labor Day Reflection 🍃
Sometimes, the most challenging journeys are the ones we take within ourselves.
A Personal Note from Me: I often find myself caught in the rapid currents of daily tasks, strategic planning, and the ceaseless flow of ideas. It's like being in an attic, occasionally peeking out, watching life whirl by. However, every time I've allowed myself to step back, to unplug and breathe, the change has been remarkable. Not only does my work surge forward with renewed clarity, but the moments, laughter, and bonds I experience in life become more vivid and meaningful.
Why Unhook? By taking a moment to detach, we grant ourselves the opportunity to observe our thoughts, reset our perspectives, and carve out space for strategic foresight. It prepares us mentally and emotionally to embrace the forthcoming months with intentional vigor.
The Challenge: I invite you to join me in this practice. Choose a day, set aside your to-do list, mute those notifications, and find a quiet corner. Reflect on your year so far and envision how you want the last quarter to unfold. By doing so, you're not just preparing to lead more effectively but to live with greater presence and ease.
Let's not just take a day off; let's commit taking time to tune in to ourselves.

Addressing the True Core of Wellness (and Debunking Common Misconceptions)
In a world where wellness often seems synonymous with perpetual perfection, the truth is, life throws challenges that test us deeply. Real wellness isn’t about avoiding these moments; it’s about embracing them mindfully. It’s about using tools that empower us to navigate those tough times, guiding us back to strength and progress.
In today's fast-paced world, there's a common misconception surrounding wellness that I would like to debunk: We often believe that true wellness means always being well and living an effortless life. However, the reality is that we all face challenging moments that can last for hours, days, weeks, and sometimes feel like an eternity.
Cultivating Awareness: The Core of Wellness
At its core, wellness starts with cultivating awareness - being mindful when things veer off course. It's about acknowledging the difficult moments without judgment and understanding that it's okay to experience challenges. By nurturing greater acceptance, we can carve the best path forward. Resisting only deepens the struggle.
Building Resilience and Unhooking from Negativity
Developing the ability to un-hook again and again, and build resilience enables us to respond thoughtfully to life's moments. It's about empowering ourselves with mindful tools and wholeheartedly committing to using them to make valuable pivots in our perspectives, actions, and interactions. These tools become our lifeline when we find ourselves sliding or facing the brink of a deep ditch, allowing us to navigate our way back to a place of strength.
Portia Nelson's Wisdom
Portia Nelson’s Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters, highlighted in the above, beautifully captures this journey; a bottom-lined, powerful story of increased well-being and self-actualization. Like her, we can embrace the true essence of wellness by challenging the myths and understanding that wellness is not about perfection, but rather progress.

4 Powerful Takeaways From Last Month
Conferences are more than talks; they're about people, engagement, and transformative energy. Keynoting at recent events left me soaring with insights. From incredible connections to life-altering content, and even dancing in the hallway.
We’ve been busy and I am still SOARING. After a fantastic month, keynoting at two conferences in Chicago, I am soaring and swimming in the incredible aftermath, reflections and take-aways. It was a tremendous few days, and I would love to share the top 3 aspects which blew me away 👇
🔥The people.
I had SUCH a blast getting to know so many incredible women at the Women in Law Enforcement Conference (a Foundation Research Associates Conference), what drives them and what they truly need.
The people I met at the Social Determinants of Health Conference (a Rise Conference) continue to think of out-of-the-box ways to solve problems, to save lives, and to really address the issues facing the health of our nation’s people through curiosity, cross-collaboration and information in ways which haven’t been done before.
🔥The engagement.
From the bathroom, to the hallway, to moments where I was preparing while dining solo (one evening), to the messages sent via social media (LI & Instagram) the number of individuals who stopped me to share their story or ask for further help, or to say that the content might actually save their 26-year-old marriage (!) was, and continues to be, more meaningful than I can express.
This is why I do this work: because of the potential (and impact) this work, when truly leveraged, has to transform leadership, lives, and relationships. To know that it’s working… that it’s landing at scale, is tremendously humbling and leaves me immeasurably grateful.
🔥The content.
Foundation Research Associates and Rise both put enormous effort into stellar lineups and content that would truly support the conference attendees. I learned so much from every session I attended, and am grateful for the work they do - and that these attendees are doing.
🔥The Energy (and Dancing!) …
I KNOW I said 3, but I couldn’t not include the dancing. Literally the energy was so high at both conferences, whether it was dancing in the hallway - or dancing during the SDoH service project packing 15,000 meals with US Health… the energy was extraordinary.

Why Embracing Our Wholeness Is A Super Power
The moment we embrace the wholeness of who we are - the completeness of our experience, we stop resisting the moments of “contrast.” Because it is precisely that resistance which causes us pain and suffering. And as you embrace instead of resist, you access the wisdom, the insight and the completeness of your life and experiences.
A month ago, as I wrapped 2022 and stepped into 2023, I took a week to dig deep with the most incredible group in Mexico, to reflect on my own leadership, life, and what lays ahead. And while some of the critical takeaways were ones I already “knew,” there was a new level in which these takeaways seeped into my being and consciousness.
Tremendously meaningful and directive as I plan for 2023 and what lays beyond, I wanted to share them with you, too.
🔑 We are so much more than how we identify ourselves. 🙋♀️ For many of us, we identify ourselves by a few, particular descriptors, pigeonholing ourselves with what is possible.
Not only does it minimize us, but quickly opens up a can of worms when we do not show up as we expect ourselves to: “magnetic,” "great communicator," "great friend,” or “stellar listener.” And instead of compassionately exploring “what’s up” for us in that moment, the habitual reaction is to self-flagellate and self-minimize: an approach which is widely ineffective and fails to embrace the reality of our wholeness and humanity.
The greater lesson?
The moment we embrace the wholeness of who we are - the completeness of our experience, we stop resisting the moments of “contrast.” Because it is precisely that resistance which causes us pain and suffering.
And as you embrace instead of resist, you access the wisdom, the insight and the completeness of your life and experiences.
🔑 The moment we drop our past we can more quickly create the life we desire. It’s easy - and very normal - to hold on to - and use - past stories as the reasons and justifications for why we are the way we are: resentful, angry, frustrated, not where we want to be.
But the moment we drop those stories, and simply instead look at where we are, and what we want to create - we no longer create from the past, but from a blank slate full of potential with a whole new spectrum of paint.. THAT is far more powerful than only using the colors of the past.

How to Leverage the Power of A Pause + Micro Moments
Amidst agitation, a simple moment transformed everything. Kneeling on the floor, scrubbing away frustration, I realized the choice before me: perpetuate the turmoil or pivot. Micro-moments hold incredible power—they reset our days, mend relationships, and alter our inner dialogue. It’s about awareness, mindfulness, and building that mental muscle. Gift yourself pauses throughout the day; it’s in these moments that a simple pivot can lead to profound shifts. Embrace these opportunities; they're catalysts for positive change.
Have you recently felt riddled with agitation? Or ever? If you have, you are not alone.
Let me tell you about a moment which, after intense agitation, changed everything: my perspective, my approach and my resolution. And it boiled down to a simple micro-moment. That moment where I chose to pause, to reflect, and pivot…
A few months ago, I had the gift of taking care of two precious, personality-filled pugs, Bear & Bella. In addition to their love, they offered invaluable lessons (click here for the first, fabulous edition :D ):
You know those mornings where you wake up and before you open your eyes, you are already agitated? At what, you have no idea! Perhaps it was a disturbing dream that you can’t even remember, but the urge is to go back to sleep and maybe, just maybe, shake the dream and shake the mood.
One particular morning, after a rough night of sleep, aware I had to deal with a sizable work issue, I groggily rolled over willing myself into a better mindset…
AND THEN… I smelled it.
This wasn’t the first day this had happened. It was the 5th(!!) day.
STRONG. Pungent. Poop. 😩
No matter how late I walked these precious pups - or how early I rose… 2 am on the living room floor was their newfound favorite time and place to relieve themselves.
Already agitated, you can imagine how this impacted my state of mind. I was DONE.
Done with the poo, done with the underlying agitation and issues.
As I knelt on the floor, scrubbing (and scrubbing… and scrubbing) the hardwood floor, I realized that my hands were mimicking my brain: attacking an issue, creating more distress and frustration.
So I stopped.
It was one of those micro-moments where I had a choice: further enmesh myself in my agitation and have that influence the rest of my day - which would be detrimental…
OR…
Pause, acknowledge the frustration without digging a deeper hole, and then pivot: look at how to best resolve the situation at hand and ask myself simple, yet critical situation-shifting questions.
Micro-moments are incredible opportunities that fill our days. And when we leverage them, we:
🧠 Reset and dramatically change the course of the hours and days that follow.
🧠 Turn around problematic situations with colleagues, clients and family members.
🧠 Create opportunities to ask a question (instead of jumping to conclusions), transforming our communication and relationships.
🧠 Reboot between engagements and meetings
🧠 Reroute problematic and debilitating inner dialogue
🧠 Ensure everyone feels heard and understood.
How do YOU leverage micro-moments?
It begins with awareness. It begins with mindfulness. And just like any muscle you build, it gets stronger with use.
Whether you set an alarm or use the “breathe” reminder on your phone, gift yourself regular moments to pause, reflect, and see if there is a simple or needed pivot.
I promise, you won’t regret it.

The Fascinating Micro Tool That Will Generate Monumental Shifts
Consider yourself a trim tab in the grand scheme of your life. Small adjustments, like moments of mindfulness or subtle changes in routine, wield the power to redirect your entire trajectory. Prioritizing your well-being, whether through mindful breathing or active listening, isn't just a fleeting act—it's the cornerstone upon which resilience, clarity, and contentment flourish. Embrace these small shifts; they're the quiet revolutions that redefine how you navigate life's seas.
Have you heard about trim tabs?
A fascinating micro tool, they create monumental shifts, and when YOU harness them, they will create radical changes for YOU 👇
As you may know, airplanes and ocean liners have rudders on the back of their engines which help the vessel pivot directions. However, what you may not know is that if those rudders tried to change direction on their own, they would break against the force of the wind or water….
BUT engineers discovered that if they place a tiny device, called a trim tab, on the back of the rudder, its seemingly nominal size can shift directions slightly.
What’s mind-blowing is that this slight, modest shift generates a sufficient counteractive force to the wind/water, enabling the rudder, and consequently the massive vessel, to change directions.
So what does this mean for you?
Where would a trim tab help you shift directions, mentally, physically, or in your leadership and career?
What are you doing to prioritize your wellbeing?
Big OR small.
Is it related to what you eat? drink? Your physical fitness routine? Your mental fitness regime?
These focuses are often relegated as an afterthought which is a detrimental oversite: what we imbibe, how we take care of our bodies, and how we take care of our minds radically influences how our brains function, and how agile they are in times of stress.
To be frank, your wellbeing is THE Foundation for EVERYTHING.
Without a solid foundation, stress levels skyrocket (already there?) interpersonal relationships and family life suffers and work deteriorates.
So where - and how - do you begin? With little, Mindful trim tabs. As the trim tab demonstrates - new habits/thoughts/priorities do not have to be huge to make a difference.
Need Ideas on how to start? I’ve compiled them in a PDF just for you.
By bringing Mindfulness to any daily routine, be it while you drive or are in a meeting, it will dramatically enhance the productivity and effectiveness of that engagement.
While wellness should never be ascribed to a single month, August, Wellness Month, is an incredible time to refocus your attention.
So what trim tab will you commit to?

A simple practice, Mindfulness built into your daily routine will generate profound, lasting benefits.
From reducing stress, anxiety and reactivity to becoming more present, engaged, more productive and overall, more content, this practice changes lives (and organizations).
The below are simple, effective ways to begin. Choose one, implement it daily for 1 week and see what happens.
Set a timer, then sit and breathe for 3-5 minutes, extending the exhale a count or two longer than your inhale.
Notice when your mind wanders - or you feel anxious to go and “do” something, and then remind yourself, it's just a few minutes, and settle into the next deep breath.
Listen to a Meditation on Insight Timer - I’ll always recommend these ;). Whether you listen to mine or someone else’s, the platform is one of the best.
Simply be present while you cook or brush your teeth. Pay attention to the sensations, the smells and tastes. We tend to rush through these moments, not savoring or truly experiencing them.
Spend 5 minutes actively listening. Sounds simple, but many times when we listen, we are really, mostly listening to ourselves - or planning what we want to say next. A Mindful practice, when we exclusively listen and ask questions to further understand our partner/colleague’s perspective or experience, it radically changes our relationships as well as our own experience.
End meetings 5 minutes before the hour. We habitually run from one meeting or activity to the next, without pause. This quickly results in our minds being caught up in the previous engagement. When we give ourselves a moment to pause, it provides the opportunity to digest, further ideate, and then step intentionally into the next moment.
The 1 Invaluable Life-Changing Tool You Need: From A Dog 🐶
Convulsing, spitting, shaking, he nearly gives himself a heart attack. Daily. And his response to fear represents a HUGE lesson:
It’s heartbreaking, but Bella, a precious pug, was mauled by a larger dog as a pup.
Completely fine 12 years later, the real, sustained injury from this event lives in Bear (Bella’s brother).
EVERY TIME we go for a walk (they are temporary additions to my family, while a friend travels), when Bear sees a larger dog, he launches full force (leashed) in the other dog’s direction.
Without fail, 2-3 times a walk (3-4 times a day) these sweet, loving pugs turn reactive out of pure fear.
And while nothing comes of it, Bear creates such immense inner turmoil and agitation, it takes substantial time for him and those with him to calm down.
A vivid example, can you relate to Bear’s overwhelming and debilitating fear-based response? Even slightly?
Unfortunately, we can all be like Bear:
Predicting the worst, defending against it even if it doesn’t unfold, and in the meantime, giving ourselves major agita.
So how do we stop it?
How do we not let our brains (prediction machines that predict the worst) have us take a dive off the deep-end based on a previous experience, disturbing our own equanimity - our own inner ease and peace (and likely activating others)?
It starts with awareness, and a simple pause.
That pause between the stimulus (whatever activates us) and our response is THE KEY to a new response - and thus a different result, creating a WHOLE NEW REALITY. It also builds greater emotional intelligence.
Do you find you get triggered too readily? Too often? Do others on your team get activated without awareness? Habituating that pause, and embracing the power of mindfulness is critical.
I’ve had a blast bringing these tools to organizations and sharing them with our Calm & Connect community.
Part of a team or have friends or contacts that would benefit from these tools? With August being Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s never been a better time to embrace these tools.
Use This 1 Olympic Trick
It’s shockingly simple. It makes Katie Ledecky, Russell Wilson, andTom Brady successful.
It’s how pro-athletes and olympians train…and it’s how they (and you) engender success.
One (sports) term for it? Frontloading.
So what is it?
It’s when you plan in advance for a stressful situation so that you can maximize your reaction and response.
It’s shockingly simple. It makes Katie Ledecky, Russell Wilson, and Tom Brady successful.

One (sports) term for it? Frontloading.
So what is it?
It’s when you plan in advance for a stressful situation so that you can maximize your reaction and response.
Let me offer a bit more insight.
Often we “plan in advance” for stressful situations, by ruminating over them. Raise your hand ✋ if that sounds familiar.
The result? If/when the situation or response we anticipate occurs, we are just as reactive as we imagined we would be, if not more.
Why? Because we frontloaded an overreaction. We justified why that was a valid response and we trained ourselves to behave and respond accordingly.
The good news?
We, like the most successful gamechangers, can frontload a more effective, less reactive, more innovative response.
By frontloading, we can not only visualize circumstances, and what reactions (of ours) can debilitate a desired outcome, but we can see ourselves CHOOSE a new response, best aligned with and most likely to generate our desired result.
It’s a simple, insanely powerful game changer for innumerable clients and leaders.
How does it work?
It requires awareness, intention and focus.
First ask yourself:
What is the best possible outcome? (for a meeting, event or conversation)
Then ask yourself:
What unconscious habits, thoughts or reactive tendencies of mine can undermine that outcome?
Next ask yourself:
What new actions and thoughts do you want to replace that with and train, instead?
Finally - and critically:
Visualize the circumstance. See yourself, perhaps “urged” to take an old action, and SEE and FEEL yourself replace that with the new chosen action.
Why does this work?
The brain doesn't know the difference between perceived reality and actual reality. And by leveraging this fact to your benefit, you can “practice” as many times as you need. Because each time you do, it strengthens and deepens that groove in your mind, making it far easier to automatically take the new, more aligned action, when necessary.
And while it is simple, it is not necessarily easy. But it’s absolutely essential if you want to change your game.
